AEO — Answer Engine Optimisation — is one of the most important disciplines in digital marketing right now. Not because it's new and shiny. Because the way your customers search for businesses has fundamentally changed, and most websites are not set up for it.
When someone types a question into ChatGPT or Perplexity, those tools do not show a list of links. They generate an answer, citing specific sources. If your website is structured correctly, it gets cited. If it's not, you don't exist in that answer. That's what answer engine optimisation fixes.
I've implemented AEO for clients including BB-Talkin, a waterproof Bluetooth intercom brand operating across 25 European markets. After applying AEO — stacked FAQPage schema, standalone citable FAQ answers, and definition passages across their product and blog pages — BB-Talkin ranks in the top three for target keywords and maintains consistent AI citation across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. The work is measurable, repeatable, and faster than most businesses expect.
What is AEO?
AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) is the practice of structuring website content so that AI-powered tools — including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews — cite your business when generating answers to user questions.
Traditional SEO is about ranking in a list of search results. AEO is about being the answer. These are different goals and require different content structures. A page that ranks on Google is not automatically a page that gets cited by AI. AEO requires deliberate content formatting: standalone answers, definition passages, schema markup, and short extractable paragraphs.
Answer engine optimisation is not a replacement for SEO. The two disciplines share the same foundation — authoritative, well-structured content — but target different channels. In 2026, complete search visibility means running both simultaneously. You can read more about how SEO, AEO and GEO differ in detail.
Why AEO matters in 2026
The numbers are not ambiguous. According to Salesforce's 2025 data, 39% of consumers now use AI tools for product discovery. AI search referrals convert 9x better than social media traffic — meaning a visitor who arrives via a ChatGPT citation is already further along in the buying decision than almost any other channel.
Google AI Overviews grew 102% in two months in early 2026, according to research from Searchable. These AI-generated summaries now appear above organic search results for a growing proportion of queries. When they appear, they capture the attention of the page. A business in the overview wins. A business not in the overview becomes significantly less visible even if it ranks on page one.
74% of users pick whatever the AI recommends first without checking alternatives (Visiblie, 2026). That single statistic defines the competitive landscape. Answer engine optimisation is how you become that recommendation.

The four core AEO tactics
Answer engine optimisation is not one change. It is a set of four content practices applied consistently across your key pages. Each one independently improves your citation chances. Together, they create a compounding effect.
1. Standalone FAQ answers
Every FAQ section should start each answer with a complete, self-contained sentence. Not “It depends on your situation.” Not “Yes, absolutely.” A direct answer that makes sense without any surrounding context.
Target: 40–60 words per answer. First sentence = complete answer. Second sentence = supporting detail.
2. Definition passages
Write a clear definition for every core term your business is associated with. Use the pattern: “[Term] is...” or “[Term] refers to...” These are the passages AI engines extract first when generating explanatory answers.
Target: Under 60 words. Include your brand or product name explicitly — no pronouns.
3. FAQPage schema markup
FAQPage schema is JSON-LD structured data that explicitly tells AI engines which content on your page is a question and which is the answer. Without it, AI tools have to guess the structure. With it, they can extract and cite accurately. FAQ structure delivers a 26.9% citation boost according to Visiblie's analysis of 2026 AI search data.
Target: FAQPage schema on every page with a FAQ section. Minimum five Q&A pairs.
4. Short, single-idea paragraphs
AI engines process content in chunks of roughly 400 words. Each chunk is evaluated and ranked independently — 95% of chunks are discarded before an answer is generated. Short paragraphs with one clear idea each chunk well and rank higher than sprawling prose that dilutes the central claim.
Target: Under 80 words per paragraph. One citable claim per paragraph.
How to implement AEO: step by step
This is the process I follow when implementing answer engine optimisation for a new client. It works for both service businesses and e-commerce stores.
- 1
Audit your existing content for citable passages.
Read your key pages. Can any paragraph be lifted and quoted standalone without losing meaning? If every paragraph depends on context to make sense, your content is not AEO-ready. That's the baseline gap to fix.
- 2
Write standalone FAQ answers for every key page.
Identify the five to eight questions your customers ask most. Write answers where the very first sentence gives a direct, complete response. Keep each answer between 40 and 60 words. Add this FAQ section to your homepage, service pages, and every blog post.
- 3
Add definition passages for your core topics.
Write one short definition for each term your business is known for. Start the sentence with the term name: 'Answer engine optimisation is...' Include your brand name explicitly. These passages are the highest-priority extractions for AI engines generating explanatory answers.
- 4
Implement FAQPage schema markup.
Add JSON-LD FAQPage schema to any page with FAQ content. If your site runs on WordPress, most SEO plugins handle this. On Shopify or custom builds, it needs to be added to the page template or injected via a custom script. Validate using Google's Rich Results Test before publishing.
- 5
Check robots.txt for AI crawler access.
Open your robots.txt file and search for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and Googlebot-Extended. If any are blocked or not explicitly allowed, AI engines cannot crawl your pages. No crawl means no citation. This is a five-minute fix with significant impact.
- 6
Refresh content at least monthly.
76.4% of ChatGPT's top-cited pages were updated in the last 30 days (Searchable, 2026). Content freshness is one of the strongest AEO signals. A monthly update — even adding one new FAQ answer or updating a statistic — keeps your pages in active consideration for citation.
What does good AEO content look like?
The fastest way to understand AEO content is to see the difference. Below is an example of the same answer written two ways — one that will not be cited by AI, and one that will.
Not AEO-ready
“AEO is a really important topic that many businesses are starting to pay attention to. There are lots of different approaches you can take, and it really depends on your specific situation and goals. It's worth talking to an expert about this.”
No definition. No standalone answer. Cannot be cited.
AEO-ready
“AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) is the practice of structuring website content so AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity cite your business in generated answers. AEO requires standalone FAQ answers, definition passages, and FAQPage schema markup.”
Direct definition. Complete in isolation. Citable.

Get in touchFrequently Asked Questions about AEO
What is AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation)?
AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) is the practice of structuring website content so that AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI cite your business when answering user questions. AEO focuses on FAQ sections with standalone answers, definition passages for key terms, FAQPage schema markup, and short structured paragraphs that AI engines can extract and reference directly.
What is the difference between AEO and SEO?
SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) targets Google rankings and drives organic traffic through keywords, backlinks, and technical performance. AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) targets AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity, structuring content so AI cites your business in generated answers. SEO gets you ranked in a list. AEO gets you cited as the answer. In 2026, you need both.
How do I optimise my website for AEO?
To optimise for AEO, add FAQ sections to every key page where each answer starts with a complete, standalone first sentence. Write definition passages for your core topics using 'X is...' or 'X refers to...' patterns. Implement FAQPage schema markup. Keep paragraphs under 80 words with one idea per paragraph. Allow GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot in your robots.txt file.
Why is AEO important in 2026?
AEO is important in 2026 because 39% of consumers now use AI tools for product discovery, and AI search referrals convert 9x better than social media traffic (Salesforce, 2025). Google AI Overviews grew 102% in two months (Searchable, 2026). Businesses not optimised for AEO are invisible to the growing share of buyers who use ChatGPT and Perplexity to find products and services.
What is FAQPage schema and do I need it for AEO?
FAQPage schema is structured data markup (JSON-LD format) that explicitly labels your FAQ questions and answers for search engines and AI systems. For AEO, FAQPage schema is essential. Research shows FAQ structure delivers a 26.9% citation boost in AI responses (Visiblie, 2026). Adding FAQPage schema tells AI engines exactly which content is a question and which is the answer, making your content far easier to cite.
How long does AEO take to show results?
AEO typically shows results in four to eight weeks. Unlike SEO, which can take three to six months to impact rankings, AI citation can happen as soon as AI crawlers index your updated content. The fastest results come from adding FAQPage schema and standalone FAQ answers to pages that AI tools already crawl. Freshness also matters: 76.4% of ChatGPT's top-cited pages were updated within the last 30 days.
